Safety Inside The Workplace

Safety inside the workplace is absolutely essential for a work environment.

It is important because it not only keeps your employees healthy but can also equate into lower costs for your business. Maintaining proper safety throughout your company can decrease injury claims which lower your workers comp claims. Safety in the workplace can also keep illnesses from spreading. When you have an injury or illness, not only is there the comp claim but also they have to be out for a certain amount of time which means you will have to accomodate for the loss of that person. This may lead to overtime expenses, temp workers, and even possible injury or illness in more people.

safety inside the workplaceThe employer is responsible to take safety concerns seriously. OSHA fines businesses over $155 million dollars every year for companies who do not comply with their regulations. So as an employer, you must keep up to date with OSHA’s rules. One way you can do this is to hire a consulting service. An official OSHA consulting company can make on-site visits and offer real tips and training pertaining to YOUR company. This is beneficial because you aren’t just reading something on the web, most of which may not even apply to you. But you are getting advice from someone who know’s the regulations and can scout your place of work and see where there are violations or concerns. This is very beneficial for any company.

Not only is the employer responsible to maintain safety in the workplace but also they must keep proper records of injuries and illnesses. This is a huge cause of fines as often, documentation is not kept or not detailed enough.

The employee also has a responsibility in workplace safety. They must complete mandatory safety training, follow protocols, analyze work areas and safety concerns in the workplace, and to work under the “right state of mind”. Workplace safety really does not have to be something hard to implement. Employees should know that they are coming into a safe work environment every day, they should feel confortable around them. Teaching the correct safety precautions and how to handle certain situations or materials will ensure this, but once the employee has taken the training, follow up after several months for a refresher training program.

One Tip For Your Training Program:

Involve both employees, but also the managers into the training programs. Both should work together to ensure safety. If a manager or supervisor is walking through a hazardous area, even if for just a second, they should adhere to the same rules and regulations that apply to the employees. Supervisors still have to wear safety gear like hard-hats, there are no special rules. Having both the supervisers and employees on the same page this actually builds office morale and makes the environment a happier place to work in…which means better production. Win, Win, Win!
